I can thank the Cotton Spice Breast Health Awareness Campaign for getting me started on this new blog. I wanted to do more than just contribute a design for the quilts; I wanted to make a difference in the success of the campaign. I have been working as the project coordinator. Most of the campaign so far has led you to free patterns contributed by quilt designers and dedicated to the cause of breast health awareness. Let me tell you how you can do more than just make your own block.
The project objective is to keep Breast Health Awareness going all year long, not just in October. It’s difficult to get a mammogram appointment in October and we don’t want that to discourage women from obtaining one. Schedule one in April or anytime year round!
One or more quilts will be pieced from blocks made by quilters from around the globe. Two categories of blocks have been designed by quilt designers. Pieced and Appliqué. The third category is Free Form and will allow the participant quilter to design your own block.
Blocks should be 8” finished (8 1/2” unfinished)
This is a blog project. Quilter participants will sign up for a block of their choice via a comment on “The Back Door” my blog, make it and mail it to Jennifer Bouchard Bradbury our assistant coordinator. Blocks are due July 15, 2008. Each quilter participant will be featured on the Cotton Spice blog, as well as the designer’s blog and their own blog if they so choose. We encourage you to tell your own Breast Health/Cancer story. Each quilter participant will name their favorite Breast Cancer charity, and proceeds from the sale of the quilts will be donated to one of those charities, decided by a drawing.
This is an excellent opportunity to be proactive in the field of Breast Health, and to make a contribution to those charities supporting Breast health awareness, treatments and or services.
Donations have been received for quilt batting, backing, sashing/border fabric.
In all of the designs used to create the Breast Health Awareness blocks you will see the fabric from RJR Fabric’s line Rose Cottage. We have received a generous donation for the fabric to complete our quilts. Please use only the fabrics from their collection to create the blocks you will donate to our campaign so that our quilts will be completed in a beautiful coordinated style.
You can see RJR’s Rose Cottage Collection at http://www.rjrfabrics.com. We have focused on the pink and green colorway but you may use any of their collection to accent the colors chosen by the designers or in the Free Form category.
Our volunteer Piecers, Quilters, Binders will complete the quilts. The quilts are projected to be ready for auction in October just in time for the traditional Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
